At SEHA Kidney Care (SKC), innovation is at the heart of how we deliver world-class renal services. Through groundbreaking research, partnerships, and clinical advancements, we are improving outcomes, enhancing quality of life, and helping patients live healthier, longer lives. Our mission goes beyond treatment—we aim to prevent kidney disease, detect it earlier, and develop smarter, more sustainable solutions for care.
Mineralomics Lab: Changing the Way We See Minerals
Many age-related conditions—including kidney, heart, and bone diseases—are linked to how our bodies manage minerals like calcium and phosphate. When these minerals are out of balance, tiny particles called calciprotein particles (CPPs) can form in the blood, contributing to hardening of the arteries and bone disorders.
SKC’s new Mineralomics Lab is the first of its kind in the region, using cutting-edge diagnostics to measure these particles. By detecting high CPP levels early, we can take action to prevent complications before they start. This pioneering approach opens the door to new treatments, healthier ageing, and personalised care.
Key benefits:
- Early prediction and prevention of chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease and mineral-related diseases
- Targeted treatments to reduce CPP-related risks
- Lower long-term healthcare costs through prevention
- Global leadership in mineral metabolism and diagnostic innovation
Research That Makes a Difference
SKC leads clinical studies that seek to improve patient care:
Gum Arabic (Natural Therapy):
We are studying whether this plant-based fibre can help preserve kidney function in patients on dialysis—potentially offering an affordable, natural supplement for kidney health.
Chronic Itching (Pruritus):
Many dialysis patients experience persistent itching, which affects sleep, mood, and quality of life. SKC is working to raise awareness and improve treatments for this overlooked issue.
Hepatitis B in Dialysis:
New, highly sensitive tests can now detect hidden hepatitis B infections. SKC is researching how best to manage these findings—balancing patient safety with evidence-based care.
Smarter Dialysis Using Technology
SKC integrates innovation into daily care. Our dialysis machines are now connected to patient records, automatically recording vital data like blood pressure and fluid balance in real time. This saves time and helps care teams respond faster.
We’re also partnering with Khalifa University to bring artificial intelligence into kidney care:
- The NOMAD project uses wearable sensors and AI to detect problems like low blood pressure before they happen during dialysis.
- Another study explores how poor sleep affects kidney patients and how we can improve rest and recovery.
Early Detection and Prevention
Catching kidney disease early can delay or even prevent the need for dialysis. That’s why SKC works closely with Ambulatory Health Services (AHS) to integrate kidney screening into routine primary care visits. Patients with early signs of kidney trouble receive guidance and follow-up, often without needing a hospital referral.
This proactive approach is already showing results. A recent program improved blood pressure control and may help slow kidney decline in many patients. SKC also helps train primary care providers and empower patients to protect their kidney health.
Collaboration and Global Leadership
SKC is proud to collaborate with top research institutions around the world. We are:
- Testing an AI-driven app with partners in Taiwan that estimates blood health from dialysis machine footage
- Partnering with Khalifa University and the Department of Health on studies including gum Arabic, dialysis sustainability, and more
- Supporting clinical trials with pharmaceutical leaders to bring novel kidney treatments to the UAE
- Sharing data and research with global nephrology networks
These collaborations ensure SKC patients benefit from the latest medical advances—right here at home.
A Healthier, Greener Future
At SKC, research and innovation are grounded in one goal: better lives for patients. We are deeply committed to sustainability—building a strong local workforce and reducing the environmental impact of kidney care.
Dialysis is life-saving but resource-intensive. SKC is pioneering greener practices like solar-powered clinics and water recycling to lower carbon emissions, reduce waste, and preserve resources for future generations.
Looking Ahead
From the lab to the clinic to the community, SEHA Kidney Care is shaping the future of nephrology. Whether through early detection, smarter treatments, or breakthrough research, our work is changing lives—and positioning Abu Dhabi as a leader in healthcare innovation.
