When your heart struggles to keep up, your kidneys can pay the price

HEART FAILURE? FREQUENT ADMISSION? UNDERSTANDING YOUR TREATMENT OPTIONS
Ultrafiltration therapies offer a powerful way to help both organs by gently removing the excess fluid that makes you short of breath and exhausted.

THE PROBLEM

A struggling heart

When the heart is weak, it can’t pump blood efficiently. Fluid backs up into the lungs, legs, and belly — causing breathlessness, swelling, and fatigue.

Overwhelmed kidneys

Poor circulation from heart failure means the kidneys don’t get enough blood flow. They start to struggle, making it harder to pass urine and clear excess fluid naturally.

The fluid trap

Diuretic tablets (water pills) help but can stop working over time. Ultrafiltration therapy can step in to help.

Ultrafiltration Therapy

Think of it as a gentle, precise drain, and can be achieved with a machine or though peritoneal dialysis.

Water and salt are gently removed from your body. No chemistry, no drugs — just physics.

Peritoneal dialysis  – A gentle approach that works around the clock, using your body’s own natural membrane

Your abdominal lining does the work

The peritoneum — a thin, smooth lining inside your belly — acts as a natural filter. It’s rich in tiny blood vessels, making it perfect for this purpose.

A cleansing fluid is introduced

A special fluid (called dialysate) flows through a small, permanent tube into the belly.

It sits there for a few hours (dwell time) while waste products and excess water pass across the membrane into it.

The used fluid drains out

After the dwell time, the fluid — now carrying the waste and extra water — drains out and is replaced with fresh fluid.

This cycle runs continuously, keeping you in balance.

You stay at home

A small machine can run overnight while you sleep (automated PD), or you do exchanges yourself during the day.

Most people manage this independently after a short period of training.

WHY PD SUITS HEART FAILURE

  • Removes fluid slowly and steadily — much less strain on a weak heart
  • Blood pressure stays more stable than with traditional haemodialysis
  • Preserves remaining kidney function for longer
  • No large needles, no access surgery for blood vessels
  • Continuous treatment means less fluid builds up between sessions
  • Works at home, reducing hospital visits
