Peritoneal dialysis PD uses the body’s own abdominal membrane as a dialysis system for patients with kidney disease. It involves placing a tube in the abdomen through which fluid is allowed to flow into the tummy. This fluid absorbs toxins and excess fluid that build up in kidney failure. After some hours the fluid is allowed to drain out and is discarded, removing the waste from the body. Patients do this therapy in comfort of their own homes and it means far fewer visits to hospital than standard haemodialysis options.
