SKC is the only nephrology facility in Abu Dhabi to offer all forms of peritoneal dialysis (PD) – Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) and Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD).

PD is an excellent and convenient ‘home-based’ therapy that does not require regular trips to the hospital or clinic. Peritoneal dialysis helps to remove waste products from a patient’s blood when their kidneys aren’t functioning adequately. Offering all the ease and convenience of a portable system, patients can go about their daily lives between dialysis exchanges. Peritoneal dialysis cleans the blood in a different way to the more common blood-filtering procedure, called hemodialysis.

Both CAPD and APD can be performed by the patient themselves or with the help of a caregiver. It involves first having a soft plastic tube (catheter) inserted into the patient’s abdomen, with dialysis usually beginning after a couple of weeks.

Using the catheter tube, the abdomen is filled with fluid that absorbs any toxins that have built up in the blood because they are not being filtered effectively by the kidneys. This fluid can then be drained out, completely removing the toxins from the body.

CAPD is typically performed manually 2-4 times daily, whilst APD is commonly performed overnight using a specialized dialysis machine while the patient is sleeping. The fluid needed to carry out both forms of peritoneal dialysis is delivered to the patient’s home as part of a regular scheduled service provided by SKC.
